Know Thyself

A bust of Socrates deconstructed in zero gravity.

24 x 30inch Hand-cut stencil, spray paint on deep edge canvas.

Socrates is considered the father of Western philosophy. A man who questioned everything. Rather than questioning the world to understand how it worked he believed we should question ourselves to understand how we work. The genesis of his frame of mind came from his studies under Greek philosopher Anaxagoras, Who’s basic teachings were, “All things have always existed, but in their original form were in tiny fragments of their current form”

This image is referenced from the Canova Casts collection at the Crawford Art Gallery. These casts, gifted in 1818 were to transform the way art was appreciated, studied and practiced in the South of Ireland. The Crawford Gallery now presents them to inspire future generations.
